Aul & Aul Seal the Deal at ABA Military Team Event

Paul and Jeffrey Aul have won the 2016 ABA Military Team Bass Tournament at Lake Eufaula with a three-day total of 45.55 pounds. The father and son duo took home $3300 for their win. This makes the third year in a row that Aul & Aul have won this event. Their pattern consisted of using topwater baits while chasing the shad spawn on Day One. On Day Two, the water began falling and Aul & Aul had to move to offshore structure using a Strikezone Lures Mega Worm and crankbaits for the remainder of the event. They focused on areas from Cowikee Creek to the dam.

“The wind was brutal. It made offshore structure fishing almost impossible. Our Lithium Pros batteries and Power Poles really helped us out on this one,” said Paul Aul.

“I would really like to thank Mercury Marine for building such a great outboard to get us to our fish and back over the last three days. Our outboard really took a beating in those waves. Our Lowrance electronics were crucial for helping us key in on our offshore targets,” said Jeffrey Aul.

The team of Mike York and Pat Vance finished in second place with a three-day total of 45.01 pounds to win $1500. “We started shallow each day with a spinnerbait and a Horny Toad. Then, we would switch over to a Carolina-rigged trick worm in the shallows. As the days progressed, we would move out to ditches and brush piles in 8-12 feet of water and use a Ledgebuster spinnerbait, jigs, and Carolina-rigged plastics. Today was tough. We caught our fifth fish at 2:30 and culled once with 20 minutes left. On the first day, I lost two good ones that would have won this event for us,” said York.

Third place after the final day went to the team of Ronald Welch and Alvaro Alvarado with a three-day total of 38.24 pounds, taking home $1200. “We had to totally change from our practice pattern. We were fishng shallow until the water started coming down. The majority of our fish came from cranking the edge of lily pad fields in 6-12 feet of water with Strike King 5XD and a Spro crankbait,” said Welch.

Final Day Big Bass belonged to the team of James Sheehan and Rollin Wilmon with a 5.96 pound largemouth worth $1080. The lunker was caught on a blackSenko in lily pads.
